COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Community Assistance
In it's first two years, the Shed completed ninety-three community projects for groups such as: Nowra's Custodial Grandparents, Nowra & Berry Museums, Berry School of Arts, aged care facilities such as Osborne House & Berry Masonic Village, Berry Community Activity Centre, Berry Showground, Pre-schools and Primary schools, Berry RSL Sub Branch and the Berry Chamber of Commerce. One of the largest and most detailed projects to date involved twenty-six members who worked on designing, constructing and landscaping a memorial garden at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital. It was quite a feat to design a sustainable garden in a very harsh glass walled environment. The project also involved Shoalhaven PCYC, who painted murals depicting locals involved in the war effort.

The demand for assistance from the Shed is such that there is a three-month waiting list. The small charge made for each project is used to service machinery and tools.

Youth Education and Mentoring
The Kids in the Shed program runs every school holidays and teaches woodworking skills to primary age children while simultaneously providing a mentoring program. With many single mother families in our community, this opportunity to work with men (honorary grandfathers) in a workshop situation is a particularly valuable experience.

Men's Health Half Hours
Men's Health Half Hours are held bi-monthly with all members of the community invited to attend. Quality speakers give informative and instructive presentations with question and answer sessions following the talk. Topics have ranged from prostate cancer and eye health to depression and nutrition. Keynote speakers have included Dr Rosemary Stanton OAM, Dr Irwin Hanan as well as Noel Trevaskis OAM of Beyond Blue.
